Three tricky opponents

The Hellenic Football Federation announced earlier today the games for the Round of 16 of the Greek Cup after a new draw (click here for the Greek article). I remind you the clubs were divided in two groups according the placement they got in the Group Stage (previous round). We already knew it was impossible to see a great battle as all candidates of the final got top finishes and they were in the same group of the draw.

The two groups of the draw

Group A (strong teams): Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, PAOK, AEK, Asteras Tripolis, Atromitos, Panionios and Iraklis.

Group B (weak teams): PAS Giannina, Veria, Platanias, Levadiakos, Kalloni, Larissa*, Ergotelis* and Chania*.

The pairs for the Round of 16

  • Ergotelis – Panionios
  • Veria – AEP Iraklis 1908
  • Chania – Olympiacos
  • Larissa – Asteras Tripolis
  • Platanias – Atromitos
  • PAS Giannina – Panathinaikos
  • Levadiakos – AEK
  • AEL Kallonis – PAOK

This round has double matches (away goals rule). The first match will be played at the venue of the weak teams on 5-7/1/16. The rematches will be held a week later (12-14/1/16). The exact dates and kick off times will be announced in the following weeks.

The unlucky teams

The Round of 16 has three representatives from Football League this season and one of them, Chania, had the bad luck to fall on to Olympiacos. Given what we have seen until now I’d say Asteras Tripolis, Atromitos and Panathinaikos were the “unlucky” ones because their opponents also look interested in the competition and they are expected to fight hard for any chance they have to qualify to the Quarter Finals.
