Atromitos needs a win now
The results of Super League on Wednesday were a reminder how unpredictable soccer can be. Asteras Tripolis got a 2-0 lead but failed to win Giannina (2-2) and PAOK killed our Bomb of the Day although they were losing by 1-0, playing with a man down since 37’. What more do we need to understand there are no sure bets? Everything is possible in every match, whether we like it or not. There is one match left from Day 18, the home battle of Platanias against Atromitos. The preview and betting picks:
Analysis: Platanias – Atromitos
*The chairman of the team, Mr. Spanos, was furious in his statements on Monday asking the Central Referee Committee to take action. This was the third consecutive time his team tolerated the poor performance of a referee (wrongfully cancelled goal against Kalloni, strict red card in the Cup match against AEK and the penalty kick of Panthrakikos).
Platanias got a very important home win last weekend against Panionios (3-0) although it came a bit harder than the final score shows. The number of chances (attempts 22-8) clearly shows who was in control but we must keep in mind two things. The first is Panionios came close to score first (50’, bar) and conceded the first goal five minutes later. The second is that Platanias’ task became a lot easier at 59’ when the opponent was left with a man down. The second goal at 70’ almost secured the win with Boumale (Panionios) missing another great chance (79’ new bar) to turn the last minutes into a thriller. Torres locked the three points at 84’ in a point the opponent looked disappointed. Coach Christopoulos was very pleased with the win after his players exceeded his goal for 18 points at the completion of the first round by having 21.
Injured: Neplyakh (DEF/6/1 assist), Gomes (MID/12/3 goals/1 assist)
Other: Nazlidis (FWD/13/3 goals) was left out probably because he asked to start negotiating for his next team. Rumors want Atromitos to be among the clubs interested to him; after all it is well known the club from Peristeri is in need of extra help in offense.
Atromitos comes from a third consecutive draw, this time away against Panthrakikos (1-1). Sa Pinto was pleased to see his players motivated but it was not enough. The home team scored first at 42’ with a penalty kick after a doubtful decision by the referee who also failed to see Igor stopped (paused) right before the kick and tricked the goalkeeper. Sa Pinto was sent off furious and Atromitos added more pressure for the rest of the match (attempts 3-12). The equalizer came at 58’ (Papazoglou) and despite their efforts nothing changed until the final whistle. The fifth place (Play Offs) is still within their reach as long as Atromitos will win today’s away battle against Platanias. Then the players will get some time to rest as their next scheduled match is against Niki Volou and 3 more points will be added.
Injured: Cennamo (GK/9)
Other: Kontoes (DEF/12) and Tatos (MID/11/1 assist) were left out for unknown reasons.
Betting Pick: The win of Atromitos @ 2.70
Platanias has failed every strong test at Perivolia against clubs like PAOK (0-4), Panathinaikos (2-3), Asteras Tripolis (0-1). Those matches were earlier this season when their performances were not that good but Atromitos remains a strong club with a very good roster capable of winning ANY team on a good day. The odds offered on the away win worth the risk regardless of the outcome. The tight schedule can have an impact on any side but Platanias have already got more points than they were aiming for and Atromitos is too desperate.
Considering the last performances of the two teams, I expect to see goals from both sides @ 2.10 and a result of Over 2.5 goals @ 2.60. Keep in mind this is a critical game for Atromitos because their schedule becomes more difficult after their day-off next weekend. Coach Sa Pinto is criticized for the negative results which keep the team in the middle of the standings. The club’s officials are not fond of changes, at least not as easily as other teams are. An away win today will improve their confidence and help them prepare for the difficult game against Panetolikos next week. Any other result will be considered negative and Sa Pinto will probably be replaced immediately.
