Aris can still hope
The draw of Veria combined with the defeats of Apollon Smyrnis and Levadiakos this weekend allow Aris to hope the fight to avoid relegation is not over. Things are not expected to be easy for them until the end of the season but a positive result at Zossimades will make a huge difference in their efforts. After all, they still have eighteen matches (including today’s one against Giannina) to gather as many points as they can and hope for the best.
Let’s have a look at the preview and betting picks for the last match of Day 17:
PAS GIANNINA vs. ARIS
Note: The coach of PAS Giannina, Mr. Tsiolis, served as a coach for Aris for a short period in 2011 before taking over the team of Asteras Tripolis. Last season Aris was practically saved thanks to him after the easy defeat of Asteras Tripolis at Charilaou (5-1). The experienced coach decided to use a secondary lineup in that match allowing Mr. Papadopoulos who had recently arrived to the bench (what a coincidence) to connect his name with an important win that helped the team stay in Super League.
PAS Giannina had one of their best performances this season in the last away matches match against Olympiakos. The players of Mr. Tsiolis took advantage of the changes in the starting lineup of the Champions and looked for a positive result that would boost their confidence. There have been some negative comments for the two penalty kicks that allowed Olympiakos to take the lead by 3-1 but Giannina kept fighting playing with a man down since 70’ and they even scored at 87’ giving a stressful finish to the match.
Aris comes from the home draw against Asteras Tripolis which can be characterized as fair despite the huge difference of the two clubs in their attempts on goal (7 vs. 20). Asteras was in control during the first half when they scored (70’ Setti) and missed more chances to lock their win. They kept failing to do it during the second half and they allowed Aris to start hoping for more. The missed penalty kick of Aganzo at 60’ was just a warning which was not taken seriously by the players of Asteras and five minutes later they paid the price when the same player scored. Despite the efforts of both teams for a winning goal, the score did not change until the final whistle. This was the last match of coach Milinković at the bench and, like last season, Mr. Soulis Papadopoulos was called up to take the team away from relegation.
Betting Pick: Both teams to score @ 2.50
PAS Giannina is a stronger at home (6W-0D-2L, goals 10-5) and their improved performance at Karaiskakis had many elements of the mentality Mr. Tsiolis wants to give to the team. Aris may not have a win at home yet, but they are more dangerous when they play away (2W-1D-5L, goals 8-15). I am not convinced that Mr. Tsiolis intends to give any more “presents” this season because of his poor stats at the bench so far (1W-0D-4L). A new negative result will not be well accepted by the club’s officials who have their minds on a Playoff placement. Considering his attacking mentality and the fact that Aris is less stressed and more dangerous when playing away, this is the best option. The next is a result of Over 2.5 goals @ 2.50 which can keep us safe in case Aris wins the match.
