Xanthi needs the win

The last match of Day 31 will be the most interesting of all. Xanthi will face Platanias at Skoda Xanthi Arena looking for the three points that will end any relegation scenarios. Some of their sarcastic statements against the forces that favor specific clubs (especially Platanias) make me expect they will be extra motivated to give answers in the field. Unless something dramatic happens again, like a referee intervention, they are the favorite no matter how poor they have been lately.

The preview and betting picks for this match:

Analysis: Xanthi – Platanias

Xanthi comes from an away defeat against Veria (3-2) which has got them very close to relegation placement. For a second consecutive match they were left with a man down due to a questionable decision of the referee and for this reason they issued a new statement for all the wrong doings they have suffered this season. Veria was expected to fight hard anyway but the extra advantage they got at 42’ when Vassilakakis received the red card made a huge difference to the outcome of the match. Mr. Kehagias stated that his team had a good performance and things could be a lot different if they had all their players in the field. Considering what I watched, I will agree with him.

Next matches for Xanthi: OFI (away), Panathinaikos (home)

Platanias comes from a home win against Levadiakos which allowed them to reach the knockout place in the standings. Since their opponent is indeed the worst away team in Super League, their win was expected but it was the performance of Levadiakos that raised a lot of negative comments by other clubs. The away win of Apollon Smyrnis against Panthrakikos on Saturday has complicated the battle of relegation. Veria also got a point after the away draw against Panetolikos and Platanias is back to the seventeenth place (relegation) which means they need to look for more points. Even if they will not succeed today, their remaining two matches are against teams without motive for points.

Next matches for Platanias: Panetolikos (home), Panionios (away)

Betting Pick: Xanthi to win @ 1.85

Xanthi has not been doing well lately but they are more dangerous at home (9W-1D-5L, goals 22-15). A win will take them out of relegation battle for good and I really doubt they will allow Platanias to get closer to them. After all Platanias is very weak when playing away (1W-2D-12L, goals 8-29) and they have lost even in days where they had a good performance.

Considering all the above, the win of Xanthi (-1.5) @ 3.30 is fine and I expect to see a result of Over 2.5 goals @ 2.10 (having in mind scores like 3-0 and 3-1).
